In an unprecedented move, AMD and Intel who are known to us as serious rivals have teamed up to create one of the most advanced processors which is the "Intel Core microprocessor". This new processor would have a custom AMD Radeon graphics core built inside the processor package. The collaboration would make Intel and AMD a very formidable force against NVIDIA.

This single chip processor would house both the CPU, GPU and dedicated graphics memory (HBM 2) and would be an “evolution” of Intel’s 8th-generation, H-series Core chips, with the ability to power-manage the entire module to preserve battery life and result to a faster and stronger system efficiency as well as an highly improved power handling system.

And just yesterday, Intel announced the appointment of Raja Koduri as Intel chief architect, senior vice president of the newly formed Core and Visual Computing Group, and general manager of a new initiative to drive edge computing solutions. In this position, Koduri will expand Intel’s leading position in integrated graphics for the PC market with high-end discrete graphics solutions for a broad range of computing segments.

It was learnt that Intel were the first to approach AMD with this idea. According to their spokesperson, Chris Walker, Intel had a problem because the AAA gaming PCs were being sold out and more customers were interested in VR, but the notebooks that were available for this in terms of graphics horsepower were very thick, heavy and not practicable. They saw that customers were already seeing some growth in two-in-one PCs as well as slimmer and lightweight PCs. So the million dollar question to Intel was how they could make high-performance notebooks which wouldn't weigh as much as a ton.

Their solution was to turn to the EMIB, which is a small sliver of silicon that would bridge discrete logic cores within a single chip package. The EMIB allowed for a compromise, placing CPU, GPU, and memory in close proximity without being part of the same actual design. According to Walker, this EMIB module layout takes about half of the typical board space and uses about half the memory power of a traditional design. On the other hand, Intel would now be responsible for supplying the game companies drivers for the Radeon GPU, although the AMD engineers would be the ones writing the original code.

The new Intel Core microprocessor would be available for shipping in the early quarter of 2018.
