RenderMan 21.5 is a significant release that delivers new features, performance gains, and improved workflows. Highlights include an innovative model for path traced subsurface scattering that is capable of producing amazing photorealistic skin, and enhanced artistic controls for creating stunning hair and fur. RenderMan 21.5 builds on the successful RIS platform and draws on solutions developed for world-class productions such as Pixar’s Cars 3 and Coco to deliver substantial enhancements, optimizations, and features.

Features
Better Skin & Soft Materials
RenderMan 21.5 is the first commercial renderer in the industry to ship with a physically based model for subsurface scattering, a truly accurate model for photorealistic skin based on deep path tracing and albedo controls. This approach significantly increases quality and realism when rendering skin and other soft or delicate materials, which is essential for creating believable characters.
More Artistic Hair
RenderMan 21.5 includes a number of important new refinements to Pixar’s break-through Marschner Hair Shader released in 2015. New artistic controls allow artists to control subtle nuances and variation in color and sheen, while also providing a more natural response to light with improved energy conservation.
Improved Shaders
All of the shaders that ship with RenderMan have been improved, and new material nodes have been added for creating specialized effects. Pixar Surface now provides new artist controls for diffuse response and path traced subsurface scattering. For smoke and fire, Pixar Volume gives artists more control over complex multi-scatter effects, and Pixar Marschner Hair offers cutting-edge techniques as mentioned above, for both killer fur and the perfect coiffeur.
Improved Workflows
RenderMan 21.5 provides numerous workflow improvements and performance enhancements. Examples include a new Maya UI for Secondary Passes, better Holdout Workflows for Maya, and updates to Pixar’s Preset Browser.

Performance
Significant improvements to Light Selection schemes in scenes with thousands of active lights allow for faster convergence. Overlapping volumes and lights within volumes converge faster and with higher quality.
