As Luke Millar, VFX supervisor at Weta Digital explains: “Everything we put on the screen has been considered, and always anchored back into the world with which everyone is familiar.” Working at such a fine grained level of detail on a project at the scale of War for the Planet of the Apes creates tremendous challenges in balancing efficiency with maintaining creative intent.
Weta’s strong VFX pipeline and technology team was key to tackling these challenges, in particular through their development of templating tools and extensive use of deep compositing in Nuke.
When we’re dealing with so many elements in depth, without deep compositing, trying to piece those frames together would be a nightmare. I’d probably cry.-Luke Millar, VFX supervisor at Weta Digital
