Fusion Studio used to Create Title Sequence Sky Atlantic’s TV Drama RivieraLondon-based visual effects boutique Lexhag used Fusion Studio to help create the main title sequence for “Riviera,” Sky Atlantic’s new 10 part drama series starring Julia Stiles as the wife of a billionaire who uncovers the dark truth behind her opulent lifestyle.
Led by visual effects director Alexis Haggar, the Lexhag team was tasked with delivering the winning pitch for the sequence by capturing the show’s glitz and glamor through a vibrant, kaleidoscopic effect. Using Fusion Studio, the team generated and animated the kaleidoscope using imagery from the show as a source, ensuring hints to the storyline were woven in to allow audiences to understand more as the drama evolved.
“We were approached by the main title design team on the show, The Morrison Studio, who we already had a long-standing relationship with, to create the sequence,” begins Haggar.
“They had worked extensively on the establishment of a set of style frames for each section of the sequence," he continues. "We used those style frames as a base to build the shot directly within Fusion, and applied the kaleidoscopic effect and animation with Fusion plug in Krokodove, all at 4K UHD 16bit float. This definitely provided a challenge when finding the right plate from the show to use for the kaleidoscope, especially with elements such as the actor’s faces, which could look a little odd. Fusion enabled us to produce our animated plates very quickly, allowing us to modify them with the client in our suite almost interactively, which saved a lot of time.”
Once the work on the sequence was complete, each rendered shot was then passed to a third party application timeline, which was then used to online the sequence and lay out the title cards to achieve the final result.
Post Production on Broken Completed in DaVinci Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio Picture post on BBC One drama “Broken,” including the conform, grade and VFX compositing, has been completed using an editorial pipeline featuring DaVinci Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio.
“As with any drama series, one of our greatest challenges was consistency. The emulation LUTs alongside Resolve’s ColorTrace proved particularly useful when it came to delivering multiple versions for international distribution. Copying grades across took seconds, rendering a complicated, time-consuming process relatively straight forward.”
VFX for the prime time drama was composited and rendered using Blackmagic Design’s Fusion Studio.
“We had around 90 VFX shots across the series and then many more flares and OFX plugins which we introduced directly through Resolve,” reflects Hall. “In fact, we even relied on Fusion Connect during the offline assembly edit which afforded us the ability to send VFX shots into Fusion during the offline process as a rough cut. That was incredibly useful once we came to the conform as we were able to simply tweak those early Fusion files based on the online material.”
LA Productions carried out a range of VFX work including the generation of 3D rain particles and sky replacements. “Our production crew shot all of the train footage used on the series in one go. That presented continuity issues when using it across the series. It was our job to make it fit,” Hall explains. “In several instances we needed to add rain to the train window. We did that using Fusion’s particle generator and then applied motion blur to soften those effects and match with the original footage.
“DaVinci Resolve and Fusion is an incredibly powerful, node-based workflow that is incredibly quick and very simple to use once you know how,” concludes Hall. “I don’t know of any workflow that’s quicker and more efficient for the conform, grade and VFX on a prime time television drama.”
