Andres de Mingo - the author of 'Car crash in the garage' has shared an amazing breakdown video how he did the destruction effects by using Pulldownit plugin in 3ds Max.

He was using PDI to define the shape of the box's fragment to make an impact with the stacked boxes. He created a fractured body for each column, then using PDI advanced fractures to set all big fragments as static objects fixed the issue and test with different hardness values until achieving good results. One of the other stunning shots are damming the car and hitting the floor, he used a morpth modifier in 3D max, setting 3 states for the mesh with different levels of deformation. Finally, Smoke was generated using Particle Flow in 3d Max and applying a smoke material for the particles.
