CG Record and RebusFarm have announced that Zombie Studio with their great work Arno Silence Force: The Great Battle have won CGRecord | RebusFarm Reel of the Month #8

Here is the quick interview we have with the team at Zombie Studio

Please tell us about Zombie Studio.
Zombie is a creative studio that integrates several areas and artistic techniques in the production of images and animations for various clients around the world. The studio has been awarded at many festivals in the world throughout its short existence. It is a consequence of the excellence of their works and their commitment to quality in their deliveries.,
Inside Zombie Studio

Zombie Studio was created based on the co-founder Paulo Garcia frustration as an Art Director that had spent hours trapped in an endless process of approvals and not focused on the each campaign's details. It led him to open his own studio where he could gather the dreaman amazing team and dedicate running time to layouts and seeking the forms, compositions, and visual solutions for each piece on which they were working. His partner — for business and life — Natalia Gouvea, brought to the studio a creative expertise of management and production of which he had no knowledge. Together they added features that have allowed constant studio growth.

Throughout these years, Zombie Studio has had an incredible number of interesting jobs. Most of them focused on creating and designing characters, although recently, it has had an amazing amount of work for the automotive industry.

Please introduce about the Arno Silence Force - The Great Battle Project. How did you come up with director to bring the Story to the screen.
As soon as we received this idea from the agency We loved it and knew there was a lot of potential for us to make a great animation! We started working on the animatic to see how to tell a funny and epic story showing the product and all it's benefits.
We wanted the sheep to be like a Kung-fu Master and the Mosquito a stealth Ninja. This way there was a battle not only between two characters, but also between two concepts of what they represent: the sheep represent the cool the ventilator provides, the intelligence. The Mosquito represent the heat and also how annoying they can be.

Please talk more about software, plugin used to create those funny character. Please explain about the pipe-line to create character fur
We used the a few software to make this film, but mostly 3ds Max, Maya, Corona and After Effects.
For the fur, We used the hair and fur native from the 3ds Max software. We create a base for the fur and then we start the grooming phase. We always have to make lots of tests to check looks and how they are going to work when animated. Fur and hair are always a challenge to make because of it`s "imprevisibility"
Some Clay Renderings

What is most challenge on that project? How your team work to win the challenge?
This was a really challenging project. We had characters, fur, a short time... but to name a few of the challenges we must mention fur again, because it`s always hard to find the right look and the way it works and functions in the animation. Dealing with character with two very different scales was also tricky, because of the way the shader may change it`s appearance when in a very small scale. In some scenes we had to make to different renders to add in the composition, so they work together better.
We knew about the challenge it was going to be from the beginning and we were really excited about this project, so this way we could plan the whole project. The key was a very precise pre-production. We tried to anticipate all the problem we could have, so we could have more energy and time to attack the items we though that could give us a headache.

Could you please talk a bit about Brazilian Computer Graphics market and your vision about it!

We feel that the market here in Brazil is in constant grow. We have really talented people here and since the tecnology it`s getting cheaper and cheaper, we can see lot`s of cool stuff coming along. Off course the main production in Brasil is still the publicty area, where there are more money involved, but with a few low the add nacional production quotes to the tv chanels and other public iniciatives, we can see new production companys arrising and some really nice series and animated features coming along, not to mention the gaming industry, etc.

Thank you very much for your great work and interview!

The Real Displacement texture are produced by using highly detailed 3d-scans to get accurate color and depth informations from a real location with polycounts up to 20.000.000 and native scan-resolutions over 16k. Using a image-based-lightcancelling-process to reduce the light and shadows in the diffuse-map. All maps are provided with layers for glossyness, roughness, ambient occlusion and more, so it's prepared for physical rendering. Most maps are leveled to set it to 100% and it fits - so you save time setting up a material. Normal-maps is provided as a alternative to the displacement, or to support it. With these textures you can reconstruct the original surface incl. the geometry with a minimum of resources and a maximum of speed and flexiblity.
